Obituary of Ruby Silzer

SILZER, RUBY (Ladanowsky)

Canadian Women's Army Corps (Retired)

Proud Veteran of World War II

Ruby Silzer (Ladanowsky) , in her 99th year, passed away quietly to a rest deserved in Fairmount Home, Glenburnie, Ontario, January 27, 2021. Ruby was  the wife of 61 years to Jake (deceased). She was a strong and influential mother to her children Bruce and wife Rhoda, Douglas (deceased) and Sheila. The shared  memories of her grand children Scott and partner Kalli, Jason, Amy and husband John, Karyn and husband Brendan will provide many moments of reflection. Ruby was known all too briefly to her great grand children Penelope, Gwenevere, Jake and Andrew who provided joy in her later years.

Ruby was one of  four children of immigrant parents. She is  pre-deceased by her brother Peter and sister Mary but survived by her brother Nicholas and his partner Teresa.

Ruby was always a community oriented individual. As a young woman she cared for her mother who contracted TB, she joined the military to serve her country in  its time of need. She became the nucleus of a military family as it followed her military husband Jake moving from Regina to Montreal, Oromocto, Kingston, Ottawa and finally Kingston. At every stop her attachment to the church and its aid to the community was remarkable. As her children grew independent Ruby retrained to serve  at the Kingston Psychiatric Hospital from which she retired. On this life journey many friends were made and drifted away but all carried fond memories having known her. Ruby will be missed and remembered as she rests now.

Ruby's ashes will be placed in Highland Memory Gardens, Toronto, in the spring. If you wish to recognize her passing please make a donation in her memory to a community or medical aid program or to her former residence.
