We are so sad to hear of Marlene's death. We feel that Marlene’s loved ones and friends would like to hear a little about Marlene’s years of nursing at the Kingston Penitentiary Regional Treatment Centre (O).
During two decades we worked under Marlene’s leadership in a workplace often described as “chaotic”. This diverse multidisciplinary setting involved many urgent issues daily to deal with. We were always thankful to have Marlene to talk about how to handle these difficult situations. Her management skills included the working things out safely for both staff and offenders. Marlene had an outstanding characteristic of being able to “nip the problem in the bud.” This skill was required daily in this complex prison nursing environment. Marlene also worked very hard to have RTC(O) achieve Accreditation Canada.
We were very fortunate to have worked with such an outstanding professional Registered Nurse Manager. We know that our appreciation of Marlene will be echoed by other nurses and staff members from RTC(O). From our work in prison nursing, we will always have fond memories for this intelligent and kind woman. We will be forever grateful that we were so fortunate to know and work with Marlene.
God Bless you, Marlene!
Sincerely, and with love,
Patzi Davidson and Carolyn Kirkup
