I first worked with John in the effort to re-write the Ontario History-Social Science provincial curriculum. He was our 'general' in the war-like "If there isn't a crisis in education, we will create one" environment imposed by the provincial government of the day. I so admired him for his calm, thoughtful, leadership in the storm. Historian that he was, he channeled Churchill's admonition "When you are going through hell, keep going". In retirement, I saw John only occasionally but he was also a writer of personal history and I read his monthly stories in Vista with delight. They reflected the best qualities of life in general and in his own
being. I consider myself very fortunate that we shared some 'history'.

I taught with John for many years at TISS. I loved how he interacted with his students and brought history to life for them, and for me. He was a man of broad interests; I always enjoyed our conversations. My deep sympathy to the Fielding family. John will be missed.

Sincere condolences to the Fielding family. John was just as he is described in his obituary. Such a dedicated educator and honourable person. I had a limited exposure to him through his work with the annual Kingston Heritage Fair. I would recommend that you google, A near-fatal case of mistaken identity by John Fielding. This is the story about a class trip to Washington DC that John made when he taught at TISS in Brockville early in his teaching career. Also google, How an early history lesson changed my life, by John Fielding. Enjoy. There is no doubt he touched lives and will truly be mourned by many people.

Our mother, Loreta, had a wonderful connection with John, as they were great history buffs. John, of course, was an academic and our mother had an enthusiasm for such matters. The time she spent with John, Dianne, Jenn and Brendan enriched her life greatly!
Our sincere condolences with Love,

Mr Fielding was my grade 9 History teacher at Tiss. He was a gifted teacher who excelled at making the mundane worthy and exciting. He sparked awareness in others ideals and passions. Whether you agreed with him or not you could never discount or disagree with the passion he had in every endeavor and the creativity he had.
His classroom became Tiss's first computer mainframe in grade 10 so that give you an idea of when this was.
I was proud to know Mr. Fielding and the few times we spoke after grade 9 he never forgot, or changed. We will miss you Mr. F!
