Obituary of Martha Van-Eck
It is with great sadness that the family of Martha Van Eck (nee Wertheijm) announces her sudden passing on Tuesday, January 18th at the age of 97. Although they are dismayed to announce her passing, her family is pleased to say she passed peacefully in her sleep.
Martha was born in the Netherlands in 1924 and, like so many others at that time, was affected by the war, enduring many hardships and losing many family members. After the war, she met her husband Gerry and they moved to Canada to start a new life together. They welcomed their daughter Debra in 1960, and all three were able to enjoy many love-filled years together. Martha could almost always be found at a bridge table, even until her late 90s, and was an extremely skilled player. She loved her annual trips to Florida with Jerry and her family, traveling with Debbie after Gerry’s passing, and spending time with and spoiling her grandchildren.
Martha will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Debra (Thomas), grandchildren David (Yukimi) and Danielle (Adam), and great-grandson Ray, as well as her many family members in Holland and good friends near and far.
Martha was predeceased by her husband (Gerry), her siblings (Grietje, Vrouwtje, Anna, Rachel, Machiel, Nathan, and Clara), and her parents (Mauritz and Betje).
In accordance with Martha’s wishes, no ceremony will be held to honor her, but her family thanks everyone for the generous outpouring of love and support in this difficult time.
