Elaine Purdie has been a lifelong friend to our family since my childhood up in Kirkland Lake; and when I grew up and moved to Toronto, it was my very good fortune to live just blocks away from Elaine & Jim, by then retired. Our friendship renewed, now in a new setting, and wow, did Elaine & Jim teach me a lesson in enjoying life and enjoying everything a community has to offer! Elaine was an avid Arts/Theatre fan, and was often more up-to-date with what was happening on Toronto stages than I (now a Toronto playwright!) was. I thought I knew Toronto well, but Elaine & Jim knew much more, and often whisked me away to visit wonderful, little-known places all over the city. I'll never forget how, only a few years ago, while walking quietly in Rosedale, suddenly I heard my name called; I turned, and there was Elaine on her bicycle, showing us how to make the most of one's day, as she always did! It was a blessing to know Elaine, and great fun being her friend; and I'm sure these sentiments will be no surprise to anyone who knew her. My deepest condolences to Jim, Judie, Jocelyn, Jennifer and all her family. Elaine was a blessing to all of us, an inspiration, and a joy.

I met Elaine at a book club 10 years or so ago. Since then Elaine and her husband, Jim, and I became fast friends over shared values and political frustrations. And we managed to share a few books, thousands of laughs and way too many plates of pie. I am very grateful for the unexpected gift of Elaine's friendship at this stage of our lives. I miss her to my core.

Our condolences to Jim and the whole Purdie family. I remember Elaine and Jim visiting with my grandparents often. So many wonderful stories. And laughs were a guarantee when the four of you were together. I know those stories will live on for generations.
Thinking of you all during this difficult time,
Nicky and Jason Sluyk (Suss)

Dear Jim and Family,
Bill and I were so saddened to hear of Elaine's passing. My favorite memories were when she would sit and talk to us about her travels and adventures. She gave me a fright when she came and Betty was in the Ottawa hospital. She drove to Cornwall by herself. She was going to have supper with us. She couldn't wait to see Betty so she left and went to the Ottawa hospital then went to see Jack and didn't tell us.Cindy hadn't flown in yet Cindy at her home and I were trying to find her all day. She finally showed up at 6 pm. We had a laugh. She will be greatly missed.

Life experiences don't get much harder than the death of a life partner or mother or grandmother...in a pandemic lockdown. Hopefully the positive memories you've shared and the support of family and friends will help to fill the hole she has left behind.
Sincere condolences and big (virtual) hugs to Jim, Jen, Joce, Judie and families.
