Obituary of Margaret Beatrice Rimmer Dancy

Margaret Beatrice “Betty” Rimmer Dancy

1930-2019

It is with great sadness we announce that Margaret Beatrice (Betty) Dancy (nee Sherwood) died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at Kingston General Hospital surrounded by family after a brief illness. She was 89.

Betty was born three doors from the sea in Bangor, Northern Ireland.  Her father was in the Royal Air Force and moved around so she spent many years living with her aunt and uncle in Lisburn.  She graduated and later taught for five years at the Gregg School and was a master at shorthand and typing.

In 1953, she travelled across the Atlantic on the RMS Queen Mary to settle in Toronto.  She returned to NI some years later where, together with husband, Jack Hermon, son, Gary, and daughter, Gail, were born. Soon thereafter, she returned to Canada to settle in Ajax, Ontario.

Later, she married Tony Dancy and settled in Markham, where son, Kevin, was born.  They later moved to Ballantrae and Stouffville.  During the 1980s, she attended Seneca College to become a legal secretary.  She was known for having a complete transcript of class lectures by using her shorthand and typing.  She worked for many years in legal offices and then part time at Scotia Bank.

On retiring, Betty and Tony moved to Kingston, Ontario.  They enjoyed travelling all over North America by car/trailer with annual stays in Florida.  They, for many years, enjoyed an annual fall trip to Cuba before the winter set in.

Betty is predeceased by father, Richard Sherwood, mother, Margaret Spence, and brother, Richard Sherwood.  Beloved wife of Tony Dancy and mum of Gary Hermon (Cathy), Gail Parks (Brad), and Kevin Dancy (Alison).  Much loved Nana to Heather & Jennifer Parks, Anne Hermon, and Ryan & Erin Dancy.  Great- Grandmother to Sarina, Kingsley, and Indika.

Betty’s celebration of life will be held at the James Reid Funeral Home Reception Centre on Monday, November 11, 2019 from 1-3pm.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the Seniors Association Kingston Region or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Please use the rear entrance of the James Reid Funeral Home.
