Obituary of Joan Marguerite Kellway
Joan Marguerite Kellway passed away peacefully Friday Dec. 22, 2017 in Kingston, Ontario at the age of 93. She was pre-deceased by her loving husband James Garrett and is survived by her sons Jonathan and Matthew, daughters-in-law Reiko and Donna, grandchildren James, Emily, Kiko, Hannah and Rory. Joan dedicated her life to her family and to education. She attended the University of Bristol during WWII, graduating in 1945 with an Honours B.A. and a Diploma in Education, while serving as a bomb shelter warden during nightly air raids. Post-WWII, Joan became Headmistress at a School in Berlin for the children of British Army soldiers. After five years in Germany she returned to teach in England and Wales, before travelling to Borneo to teach in a School operated by Shell Oil. Later, she moved to Canada, where she taught in Calgary and graduated from the University of Alberta with an Advanced Graduate Diploma in Education. Joan then taught in Victoria, where she married her true soulmate, and they came to Kingston in 1962 to start a family. While teaching at KCVI, she pursued a Masters of Arts Degree at Queen’s University, eventually becoming a Lecturer at the Faculty of Education at Queen’s for over 20 years. In her retirement she continued to teach international students until she was almost 90. She loved being surrounded by her family and many friends. She touched the lives of thousands of students and teachers worldwide during her life and will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate to know her. Funeral mass will be held on Friday December 29 at 11am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at 392 Palace Rd. Kingston. Friends will be received at the church from 10:15 until the service.
